In one of the most dramatic moments in Indy 500 history Danny Sullivan took the lead from Mario Andretti on lap 120. As he was completing the pass, Danny Sullivan's car spun directly in front of Mario Andretti in turn one, doing a complete 360 degree spin. Andretti slipped by unscathed, while Sullivan's car somehow avoided contact with the concrete wall. Sullivan remarkably gathered control and continued in the race. About 20 laps later Sullivan managed to pass Andretti for the lead and would go on to win his first and only Indy 500. Due to the spin by Sullivan and subsequent recovery, the race became known in auto racing lore as the "Spin And Win".
